México is an expansive and incredibly diverse country which truly has something to offer for every traveller: white sanded Caribbean beaches, Pacific coast surging paradises, historic and awe inspiring Mayan and Aztec ruins, dense steamy jungles, cloud forests, vast deserts, snow-capped volcanoes, mouth wateringly delicious cuisine, and a cultural melting pot of sprawling urban metropolises – teeming with history, art and culture. México is good to visit all year round owing to it’s vast size and topographically variable microclimates, and will give you plenty of ‘experiential bang’ for your buck! Thanks to it’s diverse topography and culture, México is a gastronomic tour-de-force – which makes dining out one of the many highlights of each day, with each new meal offering a unique palette of culinary indulgence thanks to the almost endless variety of dishes.

This twelve day tour is a great introduction to Southern México – combining some of the best Mayan and Aztec ruins, México’s iconic pre-Hispanic civilisations who built some of the world’s greatest archaeological monuments; along with the rich historical and cultural heritage from México’s colonial past – in addition to a visit to one of the largest and most interesting metropolises in the world … Mexico City. A highly recommended extension to this itinerary would be the addition of 2-3 days in Cancun to relax in the Caribbean sun after having explored the jaw-droppingly spectacular Chichen-Itza ruins.

DAY ONE + TWO

Cuidad de México

Your journey through Southern Mexico commences in the vibrant capital, Mexico City, often referred to as “D.F.” (Distrito Federal / Federal District). After a warm welcome at the airport, we’ll transfer you to your accommodation in the heart of the historic district. Given the city’s immense size, it’s not unusual for the journey from the airport to be a long one but, rest assured, it will be well worth the effort!

Mexico City stands as one of the world’s largest urban hubs and the oldest in the Western Hemisphere. Known as Tenochtitlan during the era of the Aztec civilization, it captivated Spanish conquistador Hernan Cortes and his crew with its colossal temples. For the next three nights, you’ll immerse yourself in the bustling metropolis of Mexico City, an experience unlike any other, guaranteed!

On day two, you’ll have the opportunity to meander through the bustling streets of this awe-inspiring city and explore the renowned Anthropological Museum, a world-class institution. Mexico City serves as the nation’s political, financial, and cultural epicenter, offering essential insights into the country’s identity. It uniquely straddles the realms of the First and Third Worlds, promising a whirlwind of excitement, surprises, and cultural experiences. Feel free to reach out for additional suggestions on activities to fill your day. In the evening, don’t miss the chance to visit Plaza Garibaldi and revel in the vibrant performances of numerous Mariachi bands.

DAY THREE

Teotihuacan Pyramids

Today you’ll go on a full-day city tour which includes a visit to the awe-inspiring pyramids of Teotihuacan.

When Hernan Cortes (Spanish Conquistador) relayed his experiences to King Carlos V in Spain, he struggled to convey the grandeur of what he had encountered. Picture the monarch’s astonishment upon hearing that “one of the plazas is twice the size of that of Salamanca” and “the principal pyramid is taller than the tower of the cathedral at Seville”, or that the stone and wood craftsmanship that adorned these monuments “could nowhere be bettered”. Teotihuacan’s craftsmanship was said to be unsurpassed in its time.

Your local guide will lead you through these remarkable sights before returning you to your hotel to enjoy your evening in this vibrant metropolis.

DAY FOUR

Fly to Oaxaca

After breakfast, you’ll be transported to the airport for a short flight to the enchanting colonial city of Oaxaca in southern Mexico.

Upon arrival, you’ll check into your accommodation in the historic city center. You’ll have the freedom to wander through the city, explore local markets, savor authentic cuisine, and soak in the city’s unique atmosphere. Oaxaca is an ideal place to relax in leafy plazas, people-watch, enjoy dinner, and learn more about the area’s cultural and historical highlights. We recommend options such as the beautiful Casa Catrina or the Hostal de la Noria for your stay in Oaxaca.

DAY FIVE

Explore Monte Alban

Brace yourself for an extraordinary day of exploration as we venture to the awe-inspiring archaeological site of Monte Alban, nestled on a mountaintop that divides two valleys.

From this vantage point, you can gaze across the landscape, imagining life in this ancient city centuries ago.

DAY SIX

Oaxaco + San Cristobal de las Casas

In the morning, a flight to Tuxtla Gutierrez awaits, connecting you to a new Mexican region. Here, you’ll meet your vehicle, which will transport you to San Cristobal de las Casas.

En route, we’ll visit the expansive Sumidero Canyon, where a boat ride through the canyon itself promises excellent photo opportunities. We’ll spend the next two nights in the relaxed atmosphere of San Cristobal de las Casas, offering a choice of accommodations such as the Parador San Juan boutique hotel or the centrally located Hotel Ciudad Real.

DAY SEVEN

San Cristobal de las Casas

Today’s exploration takes us to the Tzotzil-Maya villages of San Juan Chamula and Zinacatán, where indigenous traditions continue to thrive. The local religious belief system blends Catholicism with native Tzotzil beliefs, viewing the world as a cube supported by four columns, surrounded by water. Gods are believed to inhabit the moon, heaven, and the mother sun. After this immersive experience, you’ll take a leisurely stroll through the charming colonial streets of San Cristobal de las Casas.

DAY EIGHT

Travel to Palenque

Today, we journey onward to the ancient Maya site of Palenque, nestled in the foothills of the Tumbalá mountains, overlooking the vast, swampy plains stretching northward to the Gulf coast.

During its zenith, between 500 and 700 AD, Palenque wielded significant influence in the Usumacinta River basin. You’ll be captivated by the architectural elegance and masterful sculpted reliefs, showcasing Mayan mythological themes. Along the way, a visit to the “Agua Azul” Waterfalls offers an opportunity for a refreshing dip if you desire.

Upon arrival, your choice of accommodations, whether it’s Mision Palenque or Hotel Ciudad Real in Palenque, awaits you, with various options to suit your budget.

DAY NINE

Palenque + Villahermosa + Merida

A new day dawns, beginning with a morning exploration of the mystical Palenque archaeological site.

Following this enriching visit, we’ll embark on a journey to Villahermosa, established by the Spanish in 1596 along the banks of the River Grijalva. From Villahermosa, we’ll take a flight to Mérida, founded over 450 years ago on the ancient Mayan city of T’ho. Mérida will serve as our base for the next three nights as we delve into the Yucatán Peninsula’s most significant archaeological sites.

Merida offers a selection of charming hotels, such as Hotel Casa Lucia and the luxurious Casa de Balam, ensuring a comfortable stay.

DAY TEN

Explore Uxmal

Today’s excursion takes us to Uxmal, which translates to “built three times” in the Mayan language. Though its name is enigmatic, its beauty is undeniable. As a UNESCO World Heritage site, Uxmal stands out as one of the best-preserved ruins on the Yucatán Peninsula, boasting low, horizontal palaces encircling courtyards adorned with intricate sculptural elements and details.

DAY ELEVEN

Travel to Chichen Itza + Cancun

Prepare yourself for an unforgettable visit to one of the world’s most renowned historical sites, Chichen Itza, recently recognized as one of the New 7 Wonders of the World. The name Chichen Itzá, derived from the Mayan language, means “Mouth of the Well of the Witch Water”, which is potentially linked to sacrificial practices in nearby cenotes. After exploring Chichen Itza and enjoying a satisfying lunch, we’ll journey to the beach resort of Cancun for your final night. Accommodation options include the Hilton for our 5-star guests or the budget-friendly Maya Caribe, offering access to the beach and vibrant nightlife.

DAY TWELVE

Homeward Bound?

Your last morning in Cancun provides the perfect opportunity for relaxation by the coast. Cancun, situated on Mexico’s easternmost Yucatán Peninsula, promises a picturesque setting along the Yucatan Channel. Following your beachside respite, we’ll arrange transportation to the airport, where you’ll catch connecting flights to Mexico City for your journey home. Should you wish to extend your stay in Cancun or explore other coastal destinations, please don’t hesitate to inform us, and we’ll tailor your itinerary accordingly, ensuring a wealth of options to suit your preferences.
