Three unforgettable ‘New Wonders of the World’, as voted in worldwide polls by tens of thousands of people, combine seamlessly in this compact 12 day adventure that takes you from the Pacific to the Atlantic; from the Peruvian Andes to the Brazilian jungle, from the jewel of the Inca Empire, to the largest water fall on earth, and finishing in the ‘Carnival Capital’ of the world with its paradise beaches. Machu Picchu, Iguaza Falls, Christ the Redeemer statue … this trip fits a lot into 12 days, but it’s at just the right pace so as not to feel too rushed, and with regular direct flights between Lima and Iguazu Falls, the travel time is kept to a minimum.

Ask one of our travel gurus about all the ways you can extend this trip – such as with a day on the Argentinian side of the Falls and even a quick visit to Buenos Aires before heading to Rio. This trip can begin in Rio De Janeiro or Lima, it works well both ways but your outbound flight time from home will probably be quickest to Lima, then you sleep on your flight home from Rio! All three of these New World Wonders: the incredible Machu Picchu, the mighty Iguazu falls and the towering Christ the Redeemer Statue – with its views out over all of Rio De Janeiro … they each bring you the kind of unforgettable jaw-dropping ‘awe-factor’ that very few other locations can offer … and they’re all in one trip!

12 DAYS AND THREE WORLD WONDERS...

DAY ONE + TWO

Lima ‘City of The Kings’

Lima, Peru’s capital and largest city, has a rich and interesting history – from pre-Inca civilisations, to the Inca Empire, the Spanish colonial rule and up to the present day where it has expanded to a metropolitan area with over 9 million inhabitants. This rich history includes times of great prosperity, devastating earthquakes, wars, colonisation, decline and mass emigration from the surrounding countryside … clues pointing to these periods of change can be found all over this expansive coastal city, which boasts pre-Inca ruins, picturesque traditional districts, modern skyscrapers and extensive shopping malls, world class restaurants, sprawling ‘barrios’, and one epic coastline – over which the more adventurous among us can go paragliding!

Your first day in Lima is free to allow you to arrive on any flight and have time to relax after your journey. If you arrive early and don’t think you’ll be tired from your flight then you have the option to ‘hit the ground running’ and tour the city in the afternoon to make the most of your time in Peru. In your half day tour of the city we will show you some of the key historic sites and buildings in the center of Lima, finishing with a visit to the excellent Larco Museum – one of the top attractions in Lima and rated as one of the top museums in the world. You will then have the afternoon to explore Lima for yourself – perhaps with a walk through the parks along the coastal cliff-top walkway known as El Malecon, a visit to the beautiful, traditional, and colourful district of Barranco, or you might like to stay at the Larco museum for lunch at their top rated restaurant – feel free to ask our travel team for suggestions on how to make the most of your time there.

Your Lima city tour highlights include: Miraflores, San Isidro, Huaca Huallamarca ruins, Plaza Mayor, Government Palace, Parque de Amor, Archbishop’s Palace, Municipality & Cathedral, Convent of Santo Domingo, & Larco Museum.

DAY TWO + THREE

Fly to Cusco, explore the Sacred Valley

After your morning Lima city tour on day two we will take you to Lima airport for your short afternoon flight to Cusco, this way you miss the morning rush hour(s) traffic and the very early start that would be needed if you were to take a morning flight from Lima on day three instead, it also gives you a full day on day three to go down into the lower altitude of the Sacred Valley to help you acclimatise before visiting Machu Picchu and your return to Cusco.

On day three we will discover the best and most culturally authentic aspects of the Sacred Valley with this full day tour which begins at the ‘Inca’s Balcony’: a beautiful terrace which gives you an impressive view of Chinchero – where twelve families still preserve their traditional customs, showing you the ancestral way in which they process & dye the wool to obtain those vivid colors for their textiles.

Later we will visit Ollantaytambo, one of the most monumental architectural complexes of the ancient Inca Empire, and one of the few places where the Spanish conquistadors lost a major battle. Very well known for its ‘andenes’ (terraces dug into the slopes of mountains for agricultural purposes), Ollantaytambo was a highly effective fortress that also served as a temple. After exploring the ruins we will continue to the town of Ollantaytambo, the oldest continually inhabited town in the Americas and one of the best surviving examples of Inca city planning, with its narrow cobblestone streets and unique architecture.

Your full day tour includes: Chinchero, ‘Inca Balcony’, traditional weaving families, Ollantaytambo ruins & town.
Lunch is included at a traditional restaurant

Ollantaytambo

DAY FOUR

Machu Picchu

In the morning we will drive to Ollantaytambo station to board your chosen train to Aguas Calientes (also known as Machu Picchu Pueblo), the small town from which the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu is visited. These breathtakingly spectacular ruins are located on a natural saddle between high mountains with steep terraced slopes falling away on either side down to the Urubamba River, which rushes around the mountain far below. There aren’t enough words to describe the impression these ruins have on you when you first see them up close, in person.

Once we get up to the ruins you will go on a full tour of all the main highlights of this New World Wonder, and after the tour you will have some free time to explore. It is possible to see Machu Picchu in just one day, but we don’t recommend it since it involves up to 8 hours of travelling in one day and just half a day at the ruins. Far better to see it over 2 days with an afternoon visit until closing time and then an early start the next day to catch the sunrise when there are fewer people around (and climb the optional Huayna Picchu or Montana trek if you’re feeling adventurous), giving you time to fully take in the surroundings.

Lunch is included at a local restaurant. Selected hotels also include dinner.

DAY FIVE

Machu Picchu: Revisited, with optional trekking

Today you will revisit the Machu Picchu citadel ruins, but this time you’re free to explore without a guide. Your tickets give you full access to the main ruins including Intipunku (the Sun Gate – where the Inca Trail finishes) – we recommend getting up early to be one of the first people at the gates when they open, weather permitting you will be treated to the spectacular site of the sun’s rays beaming in from over the mountains and slowly illuminating the ruins at sunrise.

We can also include the permits for the popular Huayna Picchu trek or the longer but just as rewarding Machu Picchu Mountain trek, both treks give you impressive top down views from opposite sides of the ruins, weather permitting. Return bus tickets to the entrance are included and your guide will inform you about the logistics on the day before so that you know when to be at the train station in time for your relaxing & scenic journey back to Cusco.

You will also have time to see more of the quirky tourist town of Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu Pueblo) – such as take a stroll near the rapids and take a dip in the thermal baths which gave the town its (original) name.

Your entrances, bus & train tickets are all included – today and throughout the whole trip.

DAY SIX

Visit Cusco: tour the UNESCO World Heritage city & ruins

Sacsayhuaman-inca-fortress
The mighty Sacsayhuaman Inca fortress, with its visually and technically impressive masonry – site of a number of important battles during the ‘Siege of Cusco’ during the Spanish conquest of the Inca Empire.

Today is your day to explore the Imperial Inca capital of Cusco – it’s the highest point on your trip so we’ve saved it until now to give you time to acclimatise to the altitude beforehand. Your half day tour of this world famous UNESCO world heritage city includes several highlights within the historical center plus some surrounding Inca ruins, including the huge fortress of Saqsaywaman – the site of a key battle during the Spanish siege of Cusco in the early 16th century. This tour will give you a great overview of Cusco: with your knowledgeable, fully qualified and fluent English speaking guide, and with all your entrance fees included. At the tour’s end you will be dropped off at your hotel and the guide will let you know about tomorrow’s schedule (and give advice on the best places to have dinner – take full advantage of their local expertise!). This tour can begin the morning – giving you the rest of the day free to explore, or the tour also runs in the afternoon, giving you time to relax after your time at Machu Picchu – with a lie-in and relaxed breakfast, and giving you a few hours to explore the historic centre before the tour begins.

Your half day Cusco tour includes: Koricancha ‘Temple of the Sun’, Plaza de Armas (main square) Cathedral, ‘La Compañia de Jesus’ Church, Kenko, Puca Pucara (panoramic view), Sacsayhuaman Fortress.

DAY SEVEN

Fly to Iguazu Falls

Today might be an early start, depending on which country you choose to fly to! From Cusco you can fly to the magnificent Iguazu Falls in Brazil (Foz do Iguaçu) via Lima in about 8 hours, but you may prefer to fly to Rio De Janeiro first instead, or how about a flight to Buenos Aires for a couple of days exploring the ‘Paris of Latin America’ before taking the short flight to the Argentinian side of the Falls? Ask one of our travel gurus for some advice to help you decide which option works best for you.

For this version of the itinerary we’ll be flying to the Brazilian side of the falls, and when you arrive in Iguazu we’ll be waiting for you at the airport, as always, to help you with your luggage and take you to your hotel in comfort. After spending a good part of the day in airports and flying over the Andes, you’ll probably want to relax and enjoy the hotel grounds and facilities.

If you feel up to it, you could go for a walk around the town – a popular evening pastime here is to tuck into an all you can eat rotisserie grill and buffet (known as a ‘Churrascaria’), whilst watching a show packed full of traditional live music and dancing – we can help you pre-book, or you can ask at the hotel reception for some suggestions. If you do go out, take it easy with the pina coladas because you’ll want to be bright eyes and bushy tailed for the main event tomorrow!). With the flights, as always, we can book the flights for you or help you book your own flights, whichever you prefer.

DAY EIGHT

The mighty Iguazu Falls… the largest falls in the world!

Here we are at New Wonder of the World number two on this jam-packed itinerary … you’ve only just crossed Machu Picchu off the bucket list and now it’s time to experience the largest falling body of water on the planet! Once again, just like when you saw Machu Picchu for the first time, this magnificent force of nature will leave you lost for words. The experience is something that neither a photo nor a video can ever do justice, the view is awe inspiring and the air seems to be electrified … quite literally, in fact, since all that falling water fills the air with ions can help bring a feeling of calm, relaxation, and well-being when we breathe them in… so take in the sights, sounds, along with some deep breaths, and savour this unforgettable experience.

After soaking in the sights (pun intended), the more adventurous among us have the opportunity to go on a speed boat ride (not included) right up to the falls, to get a true sense of the raw power of nature unleashed by the Iguazu river. There is also time to enjoy a very interesting tour of the impressive Itapu dam, nearby, which is an engineering marvel generating power for the whole region (optional). Another great place to visit is the brilliant bird park – we can help you pre-book all of it, have a chat with one of our team for more information.

If you can spare the time, we highly recommend adding another day in Iguazu to go over to the Argentinian side of the falls to see them from a different angle on the extensive walkways – it’s only by viewing the falls from two perspectives that you can get a true sense of the scale of this site. You can travel across from your hotel on the Brazilian side then return in the afternoon, or you might like to stay at night in a hotel on the Argentinian side instead… which the option to fly to Buenos Aires afterwards … so many options, it can we difficult to choose . we know! But we’re here to help you navigate all the possibilities and create your own fully customised itinerary.

DAY NINE > ELEVEN

Rio De Janeiro ‘Carnival Capital of the World’

Two down, one more New World Wonder of the World to go! We’ll take you back to airport for you short flight to one of the most unique and exciting cities in the world, Rio De Janeiro! Upon arrival we’ll take you to your hotel of choice – whether that be on the famous Copacabana beach or the popular Ipanema beach strip… there are a plenty of excellent options to choose from, and we’ll help you pick out the best one for you.

The next day we’ll have an early start as it’s time for your full day tour of this world famous city, there’s so much to see here that no amount of tours could ever fully do it justice, but on this full day tour we’ll show you the main highlights for which Rio is most famous – number one being, of course, the New Wonder of the World – the iconic ‘Christ the Redeemer’ statue that looks out over the Rio skyline towering 30 m (100 ft) above the 700 m (2300 ft) high peak of the Corcovado mountain.

This tour is an excellent way to see the best of Rio in only one day, you’ll get the chance to visit both Sugar Loaf and Corcovado. In the morning, after pick up, we’ll do a Panoramic tour of downtown Rio passing by the Sambodrome and a stop at the Metropolitan Cathedral which was built in a pyramidal form with a height of 80 meters (262 ft). Familiarize yourself with the traditional Cinelândia Square with its historical buildings, the Municipal Theater, the National Library and the National Museum of Fine Arts. Through the Aterro do Flamengo, you will be taken to the neighborhood of Urca where one of the largest symbols of the city is located: Sugar Loaf. You’ll travel all the way to the top in two steps by cable car. The first cable car takes us to Urca Hill, a vantage point 215 meters (705 ft) high from which you’ll already have beautiful views of Guanabara Bay and its islands, the Rio-Niterói Bridge and Corcovado Mountain. At this point, a second cable car takes us up to the top. At 395 meters (1,296 ft) we’ll enjoy
splendid views of Copacabana beach, the Santa Cruz fortress and several beaches of Niterói. After the morning tour, relax and enjoy a delicious Brazilian lunch at a buffet restaurant.

In the afternoon, we’ll go by the Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon (not open on Sundays) on your way to reach the Cosme Velho Train station at the bottom of Corcovado Mountain to take the ride up to the top, through the dense Tijuca rain forest to the 38m tall (125ft) iconic ‘Christ Redeemer’ statue … your final New World Wonder on this fantastic itinerary! Once at the top, you’ll have a good 40+ minutes to enjoy the spectacular views of Rio and the surrounding countryside.

DAY TWELVE

Homeward Bound?

Today, you have a free day to allow you the flexibility of taking whichever flight home works for you, your private air-conditioned airport transfer is included, of course, and will be programmed at whatever time of the day needed to get you to your airport in Rio De Janeiro. Choosing a later flight, if possible, will give you some free time to walk along some of Rios famous beaches one more time before you leave.

… but this doesn’t have to be the end of your trip! How about extending your Latin American adventure? Why not add some time in the Brazilian Amazon, or extend your time in Peru to include the Peruvian Amazon? You could include a visit to Buenos Aires on your way back or, if you’re planning an extended tour, include visits to popular regions of Brazil, Argentina, and Chile whilst you’re in this part of the world… Ask your Travel Guru to find out what’s possible with your time and budget.
